Thanks a lot Molly. I can't tell you how helpful your podcasts have been to me and to those to whom I have recommended your site. I am in awe of how you can do this and medicine at the same time. But, you should not be staying up til 2 AM to do it.
Look back through your many emails and you will remember me, a psychiatrist. Your gonna get depressed yourself if you keep on creating these podcasts at 2 AM like this one. I like the questions. But, if someone is depressed, you really need to ask them if they are suicidal. Ask if they have suicidal ideation and if they do, if they have any plans to do it and what those plans are. Before I ask depressed patient if they are actually suicidal, I ask them if they have thoughts of death, not suicidal thoughts, but just that they wish that it was "all over" and they don't have to worry about things any more. This helps establish the degree of depression. Overall you are doing an incredible job! I envy your energy level and dedication.
Hi George. I appreciate your feedback. And you are absolutely right. We need to ask about suicidal ideation when evaluating depression. I took the questions for this podcast directly from the Geriatric Depression Scale. I will try to remember to incorporate questions about suicidal ideation in future podcasts covering depression. And will try to post some questions about suicidal ideation in Spanish in this forum this weekend.
Thanks
